Keita - Brönnimann - Niggli (CI, CH)
Aly Keita is one of the grand masters of the balafon, the West African xylophone. The Ivorian musician has won countless awards (including the German world music prize "Ruth" and the German Jazz Prize in 2022) and adapts the balafon in collaboration with artists such as Joe Zawinul, Omar Sosa, Pharao Sanders, Manu Gallo and Jan Garbarek. Together with the Swiss clarinettist Jan Galega Brönnimann and the Swiss drummer Lucas Niggli, both born in Cameroon, Keïta mixes the traditional African repertoire with Western jazz, improvisation and African rhythms. This "brotherhood of vibes and grooves" takes the audience on an adventurous journey - from the deepest jungle across great distances under the African sky all the way back to Europe. Press: Next up was one of the most gripping sets of the season, complete with a West African pulse. Musicians Aly Keita (balafon, a precursor to the Malian marimba, with gourd resonators beneath each wooden keyboard strap), Jan Galega Brönnimann (bass clarinets) and Lucas Niggli (drums) focused on the highest form of groove, enriched with an immense force of musical optimism. Precipitation April 2017 This CD is indeed a delight! Best Jazz Album 2016 Telegraph, London 2016 "What Jan Galega Brönnimann and his two accomplices performed on the opening night of the festival was of congratulatory splendour. What begins with simple melodic lines becomes increasingly complex, adventurous and unleashed as the performance progresses. Brönnimann's clarinets sometimes serve as electronically alienated bass accompaniment, sometimes as solo tools, Keita's balafon is pushed to the limit, and what Niggli organises behind his drums is a discipline in itself anyway."
