MoZuluArt (Benefizkonzert)

Their first performance could not have been more fitting: It was to celebrate "10 Years End Of Apartheid" when Vusa Mkhaya, Ramadu, Blessings Nkomo and Roland Guggenbichler took their first steps together on stage at the Vienna Radiokulturhaus towards MoZuluArt and their unique combination of classical and African music.

The ensemble has always approached Mozart's music with care. The melodies of the Austrian master have been enriched with elements of the singing tradition from southern Africa, such as the characteristic male voices and the typical snapping sounds of the Ndebele and Xhosa. The group's repertoire is complemented by compositions by Miriam Makeba and Solomon Linda, as well as Mbube and gospel traditionals, which MoZuluArt interprets in a European context.

MoZuluArt has always been open to collaborating with artists from different genres: They have made music with jazz greats such as Wolfgang Puschnig and Jon Sass, with the singer Erika Pluhar and with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. This was one of the reasons for the association with the Ambassade String Quartet, which has existed since 2007.

"Music has always managed to bring people from different backgrounds closer together" (Vusa Mkhaya). You will understand this sentence when MoZuluArt sing their version of Mozart's aria "In diesen heil'gen Hallen". And with "Zumba" at the latest, it becomes clear why MoZuluArt concerts regularly end with standing ovations!
