Rattling nostalgia

The colour already flakes off a little in some spots. Here and there, rust has left its traces, but that's exactly what adds to the charm of the carriage. The door opens. A big step up, into the past. Wooden benches. Luggage net. Old original signs on the walls with very strict instructions. "If sneezing, coughing, spitting, please use your handkerchief", the sign in the bar carriage spells out. And not just any old bar carriage. It's the "KGB-Bar", the Kieferer cross-border train bar. 6.1 kilometres of nostalgia

The Wachtl-train is a museum railway. Put into operation in 1880, the electrically powered train transported only goods on the section between Bavaria and Tirol until 1991. In its category – 900 mm gauge – the nostalgic train is considered the oldest private narrow-gauge railway in Europe, running between two countries. On its way between Wachtl in the municipality of Thiersee and Kiefersfelden in Germany, it travels through an extensive hiking and recreational area. Klausenbach River. Thierseer River. Oberaudorfer Alpine Farms. Gießenbachklamm Gorge. The lakeland area of Kufsteinerland. Leisurely 15 km/h. 6.1 kilometres of rattling nostalgia. A travelling experience like at the beginning of the age of the railway.
