A nostalgic and romantic "border crossing" on the Inn ferry is not to be missed. "Fährmann hol über" that was what farmers and workers from 1770 to 1973 who crossed between Kiefersfelden and Ebbs used to say. The Inn ferry formed a link between Bavaria and Tirol. This historic means of transport started operating again in 1998. An eleven metre long and 2.80 m wide ferry boat made out of larch wood provides room for twelve passengers and their bicycles and operates daily from May to October, from 9.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. "Transporter" Johann Larcher brings you safely across the Inn on a high wire in around 4 minutes.

The Inn ferry is close to ‘Blumenwelt Hödnerhof’ in Ebbs-Eichelwang.

Operates

22nd April to mid October, daily from 10.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.

Prices

Crossing per person EUR 2.00 (children up to the age of 15 go for free)

Bikes carried free of charge

The Wachtl Express Kiefersfelden is a narrow-gauge railways which is out of the ordinary. Up until 1990 it operated on a 5 km long electric route, with a track width of 900 mm, and was used exclusively for freight haulage. Today still there are 12 to 14 trains which operate on the tracks daily, each transporting around 400 tonnes of limestone from Thiersee to Kiefersfelden to the Heidelberger cement works. 2 electric ‘Crocodile’ type locomotives are used dating from 1929 and 1930.

In 1990 Museums-Eisenbahn-Gemeinschaft Wachtl e.V., thanks to very active support from Heidelberger Zement AG Werk Kiefersfelden, were able to purchase first two, and later a third carriage from Wendelsteinbahn Brannenburg; all three were built in 1912.. This then meant a passenger train could run on the works’ tracks on 7 weekends of the year.

In 1994 the "Museums-Eisenbahn" then received government funding and was able to get going, especially thanks to support from an official in the Bavarian Department of Transport who was a train enthusiast, the government of Upper Bavaria, German Federal Railways and Kiefersfelden district council. Thanks to its location in Tirol the Wachtl-Express is part of the international rail links.

A trip on the "Wachtl-Express" from Kiefersfelden to Wachtl/Tirol is an unforgettable experience. While the Nostalgie Express whooshes through the town at 15 km/hr, thirsty guests can enjoy a glass of Bavarian ‘Weißbier’, and other beverages, in the lovingly furnished "KGB-Bar" - the "Kieferer Grenz-Bahn-Bar".

Wendelstein has more to offer than just a nice view!

The oldest rack and pinion railway in the German Alps goes from Brannenburg into the Inntal, up to the 1838m impressive mountain. On the west side a modern, large cabin cable car hovers from Bayrischzell-Osterhofen in just a few minutes to Bergstationi. Visitors have to cover the last few metres altitude to the summit on foot. On the secure hiking trail information boards from GEO Park are helpful, while the clear drawings and easy to understand texts explain how the Alps came into being.

Chiemseebahn Railway

Chiemseebahn is the last of the legendary steam railways in the world, heralding the transportation age around the turn of the last century in large and smaller towns around the globe. It is still operational today using wagons and locomotives – all the original 1887/1888 versions - and have for several years now had historic monument status.

Chiemsee Schifffahrt Boats

The aim of King Ludwig II, fairytale king and aesthete, was for the splendour of ‘Herreninsel’ to outshine that of the castle in Versailles. The spaciousness of the park, the width of the hall of mirrors, excellent guided tours ... so many things contributed to making this into the sovereign’s fantasy realm. In contrast ‘Fraueninsel’ is quite different. It is more romantic, densely populated, yet manageable, with lovely restaurants, cafés and fishing huts and is also lovingly taken care of by the "good souls" of the island, the Benedictine monks. The Chiemsee boat voyage connects these islands to the mainland 365 days a year, and tempts you to go on special trips, celebrations, conferences and seminars on board the ship. ‘Chiemsee-Schifffahrt’s’ fleet comprises 12 ships with a total capacity of around 5600 passengers, of which 11 can be used for the conveyance of passengers.
